This multidisciplinary program provides graduates with the broad knowledge base and wide range of skills they require as professionals in the environment field. Students receive a grounding in air, water, and soil processes and contamination, biotechnology, instrumentation and expert design. The program also requires the student to develop proficiency in environmental management. Expertise is drawn from a number of degree programs including Applied Chemistry and Biology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental Health.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements are intended to ensure that the student has the sufficient background knowledge in subjects necessary to succeed in this program. Eligible applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

[BLUE BALL GIF] Degree graduate of one of the following programs: Science programs (e.g. Chemistry or Biology), Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Mining and Metallurgical Engineering.
[BLUE BALL GIF] Degree graduate of other programs (i.e. environment related), subject to the approval of the program co-ordinator.
[BLUE BALL GIF] Individual without a degree but an equivalent level of education and experience in environmental science or engineering, subject to the approval of the program co-ordinator.

Admission Process

Applicants must complete an application form for the program and be accepted before entering the program. Application forms and general information are available from Christina Smith at (416) 979-5185, in the Continuing Education office. Applicants wishing to enroll in the program must provide evidence of prior academic accomplishments or relevant work-related experience. The program co-ordinator reserves the right to limit entry into the program. The co-ordinator may also request applicants to reinforce certain fundamental subjects such as math and chemistry, prior to admission in the program. For further information on the program requirements please contact the program co-ordinator, Dr. Steven Liss at (416) 979-5313 or fax (416) 979-5044, or the program director, Dr. John Hicks at (416) 979-5185 or fax (416) 979-5277.

Certificate Requirements

The Successful completion of ten courses, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00, is required for the certificate.

Certificate Registration

Students pursuing a certificate must formally register in the certificate program prior to the completion of 50 percent of the curriculum requirements for the certificate. To allow maximum flexibility in crediting external courses and/or courses previously taken at Ryerson it is recommended that students register in a certificate at the beginning of their first course. For complete details on the advantages of early registration, registration deadlines and transfer credit restrictions all students should read Policies on Registration and Graduation in Certificate Programs, see Ryerson Polytechnic University Continuing Education Information.

Requirements for Graduation

To graduate, you must complete an Application to Graduate with a Certificate, prior to the appropriate application deadlines. You must have successfully completed, within your official time span, one of the published certificate curricular, from time of first admission to the certificate until completion.
