Basically, you must complete two labs in every lab period. There are 10 labs.
As you work through the labs and follow the lab leader's instructions, take complete notes. These will be your only reference for future sessions. Ask about any items you miss! Ask for assistance immediately if you get "lost". If you get "hopelessly lost": a) complete the lab looking over the shoulder of another student and continue to take complete notes! b) repeat the entire lab on your own time before the next class.
If you miss only a section of a structured lab or are not able to complete the lab in the alloted time, complete the missed material on your own time before the next class.
[While communication between students in the labs is not discouraged, note that your neighbour will not be present when you are working on your own or during testing. Learn to rely upon your own knowledge and notes, and avoid becoming dependent on friends and classmates - these dependencies have proven to be guaranteed recipes for academic disaster, sooner or later!]
Finally, please treat the equipment and your colleagues with respect in the labs.
Grading:
The labs will be graded by the lab leader based upon your
observed performance:
a) in following the lab instructions both
from the manual and from the lab leader, and
b) in executing the
required work.
The grades assigned will be Absent, 0, 1, or 2. All the labs are designed to fill, or even exceed, the lab period. You are highly encouraged to do as much of the lab on your own time as possible and use the lab to ask questions of the TAs, improve your work or learn more about C.
Preparation:
Read A User's Guide to MATRIX before the first lab
(especially sections on file systems, permissions, and elementary
commands), and bring it to all labs. THOROUGHLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO EACH LAB; NOTE THAT
MOST LABS REQUIRE PREPARATORY WORK TO BE DONE AT HOME.
